Hanging out at the hospital
We came in last night around 6pm. When we got here the first thing they told me was to strip down to the nude to get in the gown. In all the books I read I would be able to wear my cute gown I bought until the hard labor starts-I was wrong. To top that off, I put the gown on backwards. The nurse we had first was a little cranky. She gave me the cervidal last night at 7:15pm. The head is so low that the cervix is behind it and it makes it very hard for the nurses to reach it and check for progress. Before the nurse's shift was over she put an IV port in the top of my hand. I am not good with needles and my mom used to tell us never to hit her on the top of the hand because that is where she would have her IV for chemo. That was the only thing that I kept thinking. It was so tight and uncomfortable because I couldn't bend my hand to do much of anything. Bob stayed until a little after 10pm and then went home to spend the night with Betsy and get a good night's rest. I slept sporadically but the nurses kept coming in to check vitals and I had to go to the bathroom a lot. I am not to get out of bed because I was hooked up to the fetal monitor-they need to get wireless ones. This morning at 7:30 a new nurse came in and said that the cervidal could be removed and that I had 30 minutes to shower, eat, and walk around before she would hook up the pitocin. She had to wrap up my hand with the IV port so it wouldn't get wet. While I showered Bob ran down to the cafeteria and got us some toast and fruit for breakfast. The nurse then came in and hooked up the IV and realized that the port in my hand wasn't working because the bend of my hand was causing a kink in the IV cord--for the stinkin love is what I was thinking because I really didn't need that in my hand all night then. Oh well! I have been having "healthy" contractions the nurses say but I have yet to feel them. She started pitocin at 9am and my doctor stopped in. She checked my cervix and said that there has not been a change. She discussed plans of hoping the pitocin would start things moving but if not could do the cervidal again or she would send me home until Monday. I am starting to feel the contractions like a PMS cramp and in my lower back. The nurse mentioned that might be the start of back labor. My doctor will be back later to check things out and to decide what the next step will be. I will keep you updated!
