Just A Little Lemonade Stand

It was time of a garage sale at our house because we needed to purge...live simpler!  As we gathered up toys that weren't played with anymore the boys begged to have a lemonade stand to earn money.  I thought about it but in reality this was a chance to do something bigger than that.  Our friends, The Lokers, had a lemonade stand at their place in Michigan and accepted donations in money and food to donate to their local food bank.  I have been looking for a way to do this around here and now was our chance.  The boys were totally on board and even made a sign for everyone to see.

I was a little worried about how it would go but with a little pep talk the boys did a great job of informing customers about where their donation would go.  In two days we raised $50.
While the boys were selling, the local newspaper came out to take a picture and talk with the boys about what they were doing.  The picture was featured the next day on the front page...it was too cute!

So instead of just taking a check to the food bank (Second Harvest Food Bank) we decided to head to Aldi and shop.  This was fun because we had to talk about what foods might be better for hungry families than others.  Nolan really wanted to get a big box of cookies but his brothers convinced him other wise.  We were also adding up the money spent as we went along so it was fun to see and hear them talk about how many of each item we could get.

After shopping we drove the bags over to Second Harvest Food Bank, the boys helped me carry in the bags. Nolan was having a bit of a meltdown so he wasn't as cooperating as the older boys.  The employees were amazing.  They met us at the door with a wagon and they were clapping as the boys came in.  They took us to the warehouse to weigh our donations and see where all the food is kept.  It was just such a cool experience.

At the end of the day, we talked about how did you feel inside when we dropped off that food for others families..."I felt happy", "It felt great." "I totally liked the wagon"...those were the words out of my babies mouths....That's just what I was hoping it would feel like.  In a world where you can be anything, Be Kind.
