Texas didn’t know what hit them...part one
My sister and her family moved to Texas in January and we have been dying for a chance to visit them. We decided to make our summer vacation a family trip there! I know you are probably thinking, why Texas in July...we say, Why not.
We flew out of Detroit with a direct flight right into Houston. The boys did a great job on the plane.
As soon we jumped off the plane, we made it our mission to find cowboy hats in the airport gift shop to get ready to fit in with the locals. Yee-haw! Nolan is so serious.
They live about 50 minutes outside of Houston so we made it to their house. The reunion was too sweet as we watched the cousins run into each others arms. That evening Lincoln was headed to football conditioning and they wanted to boys to join them. I was a little skeptical about two hours of football conditioning in the hot temperature but the boys had a blast. It was being put on my some ex-NFL players.
The next morning we all jumped in the car and headed into Houston to visit the Children's museum. It was so much fun. The kids could have stayed there the whole day.
In the basement of the museum, there was a ropes course for the kids to conquer. The boys were amped up about it but Addie was a little timid at first.
Turns out all she needed was a little pep talk from Maw Maw and Paw Paw for her to overcome her fears!
A great part of Danielle's neighborhood were the many pools available to use each day. One of the pools had two large water slides, a lily pad climber along with a waterfall. The other had several diving boards, two water slides, and a bucket dump. We were amazed with how brave all the kids were with jumping off the high dive!
Life was good at the pool!
Tuesday morning we jumped into the car and headed 2 hours over to Galveston, TX. We had lunch at this cute little house that was turned into a restaurant. Lincoln has his first taste of Coke.
We walked down the streets and into the many little shops. Our favorite was the candy store. They had specific times throughout the day that you could watch fresh taffy being pulled. If you missed the taffy, there was a "taffy man" who would throw fresh wrapped taffy to onlookers. We got our fill of taffy.
Shopping with small kids is never easy but they sure had fun being silly at each store.
Hot and sweaty in Galveston
Landon has such a sweet spot for May. He spent most of the days loving on her, getting her to stop crying, pushing her in the stroller, etc.
After the downtown exploring, we headed out to the beach. The ocean was beautiful and the kids had a blast splashing around and jumping the waves.
Each day we spent time at the pool cooling off from the high temperatures. It was noted that the week we visited was the highest temps recorded for the year.
One of Danielle's neighbors are a pretty talented Texas boil man. He decided to create a southern boil for us all to try. It was full of sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob, shrimp, and crayfish. We had a good time watching him cook it all up. He let the kids touch and play with the live crayfish. He even taught us how to peel and eat it. All the kids tried it without complaints.
It was delicious but quite spicy with that special Texas heat! We ate like locals right off the table...no plates needed!
