Big Ballers
Basketball season has officially started for the Boone Boys! Last Saturday we headed to the YMCA in Avon for basketball practice and a game for both Carter and Landon. I was not sure how this was all going to go but I am always up for trying something new. Carter reassured me that he already knew how to dribble and shoot he just really needed to know how to aim. Before we left the house I got the boys dressed in short sleeves and comfy pants so they could run around comfortably. When we arrived at the gym I was surprised by how many kids were decked out in real basketball attire…jerseys, baggie shorts, basketball high top shoes, wristbands, and headbands. Our kids did look a little out of place but thank goodness they got their reversible jersey because Carter was so excited to wear his. Bob and I watched as the teams gathered on the courts and began to "practice." Practice consisted of shooting the ball, dribbling, and passing the ball to other teammates. On the boys team the coach seems a little overwhelmed to say the least so Bob was graciously trying to help without upsetting him because the kids just stood in line and shot the ball into the hoop. When the "game" began the coach told the kids to play defense and they were staring at him in utter confusion. He quickly taught them to stand in a line under the basket with their hands high in the air. Watching the kids play was quite comical because they all just want to shoot and no one dribbles. Bob and I were cracking up as we watched them play. Carter is our pleaser…he looks to us after he does anything to see if we are watching and if we approve. He scored the first basket for the team and boy was he proud. Landon said, "I want my own ball." When I told him that during the game we only use one ball he wanted to be done, sit out, and eat a snack.
Afterwards Bob and I reflected upon the experience stating that there are a few kids that are already pretty good and that we need to work more with the kids. We also agree that as the boys are growing up we are having a blast just watching them participate.
