Landon’s 6th grade trip to Camp Fitch

This is Bob checking in.
Back in 2020, I was supposed to go with Landon as a parent chaperone to Camp Fitch for his 5th grade field trip.  Because of COVID those plans had to be canceled.  Amherst schools decided to reschedule it for 6th grade and I was able to make it work this fall.  The boys were talking about the “open air” cabins leading up to the trip, but I didn’t know what they meant.  We showed up to find out that the cabins were a blend of cabin and tent.  You can’t see it here, but the doorway on the other side of the cabin has 3 large windows with  no screens or windows to keep out the weather.  We brought sleeping bags and hoodies because we knew the temp was going to drop into the 40’s at night.

When we arrived I was assigned a group of 7 boys.  This could have gone very wrong, but I was crazy lucky with the boys that ended up in my group.  We had an incredible few days.
One of my favorite aspects of the camp was that it was right off of Lake Erie (near Erie, PA).  We were maybe 70 yards from the shoreline and could hear the waves crashing at night.  There were multiple eagles nests right there on the property and we would see them playing and hunting multiple times throughout the day.
There were 12 different activities that we were scheduled to do.  They partnered us with a group of girls as well, which was really funny to experience.  The boys couldn’t have been more different than the girls.  The girls were VERY shy and quiet, while the boys were wild and loud. By the time we made it through to the second half of the activities, the girls started to come out of their shell and the boys took it to another level of craziness.

Candle making was a hit.

Landon was selected to get to lower the flag on the first day and learned how to fold it properly.
Eating time was well planned.  The kids ate really well there.  Landon learned that he likes French Toast.

The early morning beach walk was cold and windy. Kids didn’t seem to mind.

The archery station was their favorite.  Landon was kicking my butt at this.

All of Landon’s buddies were there and it was a lot of fun to see him interact with them.  He is really lucky to have such a fun group of kids in his grade.

The 9 square game was set up right outside of the cafeteria. The kids would beg to head to breakfast lunch and dinner early to get extra time playing this game.  Us adults even jumped in to have some fun.

My group of boys and the group of girls we were paired with.

These kids were so ready to jump on the horses.  What a cool experience for them.

They had a really nice rock climbing station as well.

All of Landon’s buddies from baseball and flag football were there.

This was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had with Landon.  Getting to spend time with him and seeing how he is becoming his own person is something I will never forget.
I missed chaperoning Camp Fitch with Carter due to traveling for work a couple years ago, but I am already looking forward to getting to go with Nolan when he is in 5th grade.
